Chapter 14 Assignment

Look at the days posted under the assignment. Without looking up the dates, identify where you were, what you were wearing, what the weather was like and any other recollections. Share on the blog. Give an example of how you could add emotional episodic events to culminating activities in the classroom to help students cross-connect memories as well.

Due Jan. 28th

  1. I think this is my favorite chapter. I do remember where I was, what I was wearing, and even where I was sitting WAY back when I heard President Kennedy had been shot. I remember the principal crying and our teacher starting to sob…I have just a strong memories from when the space shuttle blew up and the World Trade Centers were bombed. I never thought of tying emotions/events or to instruction/skills.
Happiness is an emotion, if I tie a culminating activity to a lesson it should be remembered easier by students. I do use music in my classroom, but more as a noise reducer than a lesson enhancement. It never dawned on me the ‘oldies’ and country music I enjoy are because of the hypothalamus. This was a very interesting chapter!!!

  2. I don’t know where Jerrie was when President Kennedy was shot, but I was on the playground for noon recess in third grade at Our Lady of Guadalupe, so we all promptly went to chapel for the rest of the day. Things that are new to us tend to stand out more. We are searching our experience to see where they fit with what we currently know. The more hands on activity we can bring to the classroom, the more students will remember. Teaching science, we used M&M to build atoms, jolly ranchers in a large circle to show cell mitosis and dissected a cow brain when studying anatomy. None of the activities took a great deal of time to set up, but involving as many senses as possible increases the chances of learning.

  3. I remember when the space shuttle blew up I was sitting in Mrs. McGuire's class and I was a 4th grader. I remember my teacher crying and feeling sad but not really understanding the impact that I do today. I remember making butter, curds and wey as a KS Day project. I remember disecting a baby pig for anatomy and it making me want to go into the medial profession even more. I remember the day 9-11 happened and the fear that it put upon us as a nation and the feeling of freedom as we knew it being gone forever. I have been able to take all those emotions and feelings and use them with examples when teaching different themes. I love to use video clips and commic strips to also teach the meaning of vocabulary and English structures.

  4. I remember the day President Kennedy was killed. I lived in Texas at the time and was a 9th grader. I remember feeling embarrassed because he was in the same state as I was and had been killed. The bombing in Oklahoma City is an emotional thing for me. Both of my parents were there and it took a little bit of time to contact them. I prayed that they hadn't gone to town too early that day. They hadn't
