Chapter 7 Assignment

In your school, is there any distinction between students who fail because they’ve turned in nothing at all and students who’ve worked fairly hard but were not able to come up with enough points, % to earn a passing grade? Should there be a distinction? If so, how would that work? Post your thoughts and respond to someone about their post.

  1. As the book states, grades are often subjective and arbitrary. In this day of "high standards" teachers often forget that we are teaching the standard for learning, not doing. If work is modified and meaningful, then only those who refuse to do should fail.

  2. I don't believe I've ever worked with a teacher that failed a student when all assignments were completed and handed in on time - regardless of the quality. Students fail when they fail to make an effort. Our students are required to attend Assisted Studies Program before or after school when failing a class. The work completed during ASP is graded, but may be penalized for being late. In general, I believe teachers want all students to pass.

  3. I have never failed a student but I have had students in the past that have had grades that were not passing. Those students were made aware of their grades and given the choice/opportunity to work to pull them up. If the student chose to make changes and correct previous assignments or asked for extra credit I had no problem with changing their grades to reflect the effort that they had put forth to better themselves. If a student chose not to do anything then it is a reflection in their effort. I also have know problem modifying assignments when needed for students who struggle to complete what the average student may do.

  4. Most of our teachers provide options to students with low grades. The biggest frustrations are from the students that don't complete anything all semester and during the last week - they want to do all their work to pass. The section talking about "What's an F worth?" was very interesting to me. I wonder how many schools have thought to make grading scales for the different students. I have been in some schools that do provide a different scale. I agree with Amy, I have never failed a student but some have not passed.
